The ringing is funded by West Berkshire Council Countryside Service and we are very grateful for the assistance provided by TABCG to ferry us out to the island for the ringing sessions.
Hosehill has turned out to be an excellent place to ring the gulls. After they have fledged many of the birds spend a lot of time loafing on the main island where they can be seen and the ring numbers easily read from the viewing screen. This means that we have proof of fledging for a very high proportion of the birds.
For the purposes of initial analysis we are using a 20 km limit to distinguish between local and distant records - 20 km covers the Dinton Pastures complex, Moor Green Lakes and reaches as far west as Lower Farm, Newbury .Several birds have been seen at more than one of these sites within a few days and it seems likely that first year birds at least wander around the entire district.
SUMMARY
For the purposes of initial analysis we are using a 20 km limit to distinguish between local and distant records - 20 km covers the Dinton Pastures complex, Moor Green Lakes and reaches as far west as Lower Farm, Newbury .Several birds have been seen at more than one of these sites within a few days and it seems likely that first year birds at least wander around the entire district.
The full records of every bird that has been reported at least once since it fledged are included on the annual pages - the years are the year the birds were ringed - so all the records of a bird are in one place even if it has been seen over a number of years.
