Ringing Demonstrations in 2011

  • 10 July 2011 at Hosehill LNR,  7 a.m. until 11 a.m.
  • 21 August 2011 at Moor Green Lakes, 9 a.m. until 12 a.m. This is part of their excellent Open Day.

Padworth Common  Ringing Demonstration 14 November 2009

This event was organised with Berkshire Ornithological Club, British Trust for Ornithology and West Berkshire Council Countryside Service.
We caught a total of 59 birds and like last year a Marsh Tit was an obvious highlight for the spectators. The retraps were also interesting:

  • A Marsh Tit from 2009
  • A Blue Tit from Dec 2007 which is the oldest Blue Tit we've had so far at Padworth
  • 2 Blue Tits ringed as chicks at Padworth this year
  • A Blue Tit ringed as a chick at Hosehill this year at just about 6 km that's our longest Blue Tit chick movement
  • 3 Great Tits and a Robin ringed at the November 2009 ringing demonstration!

Hosehill LNR Ringing Demonstration 4 July 2010

All together we caught 126 birds of 17 species including a nice variety of Warblers so there was plenty for everyone
to see. The retraps were all Hosehill birds and the Tits included 5 Blue Tits ringed as chicks in 2010, 1 Great Tit
ringed as a chick in 2009 and 7 ringed as chicks in 2010.

Padworth Common  Ringing Demonstration 8 November 2009

As part of the celebrations this year for 100 years of the British Ringing Scheme we held a ringing demonstration at Padworth Common. This event was organised with Berkshire Ornithological Club, British Trust for Ornithology and West Berkshire Council Countryside Service.
We caught a total of 49 birds and the Marsh Tit was an obvious highlight for the spectators. The retraps were also interesting:

  • A Great Tit which had been ringed at Padworth in 2006 and but hasn't been retrapped in-between times
  • A juvenile Blue Tit ringed in July 4 km away in Burghfield Common
  • A juvenile Blue Tit ringed September 3 km away at Aldermaston Gravel Pits by Newbury Ringing Group
  • Two Great Tits ringed as chicks at Padworth as part of our ongoing nest box study

This demonstration was organised with Theale Area Bird Conservation Group and West Berkshire Council Countryside Service. We had a very successful morning and many visitors stayed for over an hour watching what was going on and asking lots of questions. We caught 97 birds of 16 species so there was plenty for everyone to see and talk about!
